Retinoschisis
Retinoschisis means a split in the retinal layers. It is chronic in onset and usually causes no symptoms. It commonly affects both eyes and typically seen in long-sighted middle-aged women.
Retinoschisis is commonly confused with a retinal detachment. The distinction can be difficult hence referral to a retinal surgeon is advisable.
In some cases, progression of retinal split is noted even resulting in a retinal detachment. In such cases, surgical treatment or laser may be indicated.
